Kazoola is an entertainment and food venue for the mature crowd in the downtown Central Business District of Mobile, AL. The scenery is a mix of modern and vintage with a small stage at the entrance, a lengthy bar, and rows of seats at the front and back of the building. The front is a bit of tight squeeze that builds a crowd on Saturday nights during band performances.
The walls display a compilation of art reminiscent of an African American museum paying homage to Cudjo “Kazoola” Lewis, the last known survivor of the Atlantic slave trade who was brought illegally to the U.S. and landed in Mobile, Alabama on board the ship Clotilde in 1860. You can find paintings, photos, and articles on the walls of Kazoola Eatery & Entertainment, and Mr. Lewis’s face even graces the front of a brochure detailing his story.
The energy and atmosphere of Kazoola is an adult setting, but with a fond energy. The music is tasteful and easy to vibe and dance to. Bartenders and cooks stay busy all night during business hours, but especially during the weekend. Even while dealing with the large crowds, they’re always polite and sharp with remembering the many requests. The owner even stops to talk to guests occasionally to make sure everything is going alright.
Food at Kazoola Eatery & Entertainment
On a calmer night we tried out Kazoola’s blackened shrimp with a side of macaroni and cheese. It arrived placed on a leaf of lettuce with hot chili sauce on the side. The shrimp were well seasoned, but a little too well done and the mac and cheese was made properly. Some places call it mac and cheese, while the cheese is nowhere to be found. In this case, the cook knew what to do.
We enjoyed the food and entertainment at Kazoola. Based on several experiences, we can always expect to have a great time without drama or stress. Plan to stop by Kazoola on your next night out in Mobile, Alabama.
