HelloFresh Taste Test: Simple, Convenient Cooking (Video)

I love to cook, try new foods from different restaurants and try new recipes. Sometimes it’s just so time consuming to gather everything that I need for the cooking part. Convenience is important in this fast paced world. For me, grocery shopping is one of the things that I’m not so efficient at. Every grocery store is different, and I find myself going in circles trying to find everything. I tried HelloFresh to see if it would be the solution to some of my obstacles.

HelloFresh delivers fresh food right to your door with recipes included to make meals for you and your family. You can choose from customization like the amount of people serving, the number of meals you plan to cook per week, and the type of diet (vegetarian, low-calorie, etc.). They even have an option to include a meal designed specifically for kids.

Let’s get to the HelloFresh Experience

The box actually came two days earlier than expected, which can be a good or bad thing. It was great that they made sure the box was available to cook on the day I wanted to. I just wanted to make sure that the food maintained its quality and freshness in the meantime.

The box was well insulated and packaging was sealed airtight. The shellfish had a type of vacuum seal plastic to keep it in place so that no air or moisture got inside. Veggies were boxed up, but free so that they didn’t sweat or get too hot. With the insulation, everything that was supposed to stay cold did even though I wasn’t there at the time the box was delivered.

What Cames in The Box?

The three different meals in the Classic Box were Lemony Chicken Risotto with Roasted Zucchini, Braised Chicken Thighs with French Cous Cous and Green Beans, and Rapid Maple Balsamic Chicken with Broccoli and Sweet Potato. The family size box came with enough food to feed a family of four. Prep time for each of the meals was different, and the Lemony Chicken Risotto took the longest. It also just so happened to be the meal we selected to video during preparation (don’t worry, we drilled it down to the most important details ;))

I had a friend join in to cook and enjoy the food, and we had a blast! The box included nearly everything we needed to prepare the meals, even down to the spices. The only thing we needed that wasn’t in the box was butter, salt and pepper.

Ingredients for Each Dish:

* Lemony Shrimp Risotto and Roasted Zucchini: Shrimp (Shellfish), Arborio Rice, Parmesan Cheese (Milk), Chicken Stock Concentrate, Onion, Garlic, Zucchini, Thyme, Lemon

* Braised Chicken Thighs with French Cous Cous, and Green Beans: Chicken Thighs, Green Beans, Black Olives, Diced Tomatoes, Gluten Free Chicken Demi Glace (Milk), Flour (Wheat), Rosemary, Garlic, Couscous (Wheat), Lemon, Flour (Wheat)

* Rapid Maple Balsamic Chicken: Broccoli, Sweet and Smoky Spice Blend, Sweet Potato, Chicken Breast, Balsamic Vinegar, Maple Syrup

The Pros and Cons of the HelloFresh Box

As always, The Taste Team’s goal is to give you our full experience and honest standpoint. There were pros and cons of the HelloFresh experience. One thing that I liked about HelloFresh even before trying it is that recipes change weekly.

Their team of chefs and dietitians collaborate to add 10 new recipes each week. This is a good way to ensure you get a variety of flavors and foods in your diet.Other pros were convenience, fresh high quality food, and good recipes that we probably wouldn’t have ordinarily put together.

There weren’t many cons, but the recipe book fell apart, so it should be a little more sturdy just in case we want to reuse it at a later date. We also decided to use our own onion in the Lemony Risotto Recipe since the center of theirs was a little too brown, but who can predict the center of an onion?

Overall Experience with HelloFresh

This is not like getting a pizza delivered or even a normal grocery delivery service. You’re cutting out a lot of your meal prep time and trying to come up with new ideas and spice up the same old ingredients. And in case you’re wondering, the food is delicious.

The convenience alone is worth the subscription. We enjoyed cooking, learning, and not having to fight our way through the stores to put it all together. Did I also mention you can choose a day of the week for your HelloFresh box delivery (Monday-Saturday), and the shipping is absolutely FREE!

  1. It looks like they’ve made some steps forward in the way they package individual ingredients – that was one of my concerns when I trialled them a few years ago. The recipes look tasty and it’s great they are always adding new ones.

  2. It all looks and sounds great! I’m not the biggest cook at home and always need a little guidance – this sounds like my kind of cooking, having all the ingredients sent to me with instructions! Gary x
