A cupcake is a cupcake right? The many cupcake shops around the country don’t seem to think so, and neither does The Taste Team. While in Atlanta, we took the opportunity to taste test Camicakes and some of the many flavors of their cupcakes. We had the chance to see what makes them stand out in terms of service, quality, and taste.
The location in the Buckhead shopping center was nicely and simply decorated, very neat, and clean. All of the cupcakes, neatly arranged behind the clear glass. They were on cupcake stands with name tags displayed for us to see.
We waited patiently in the line for our turn to make our selections. It was somewhat difficult for the young woman to hear us and for us to hear her with the glass being so tall. She was very busy, and we could tell.
The other woman helping us was more patient and polite. Nevertheless, they serviced our needs and moved quickly. We got what we asked for, she asked us if we needed anything else, and went on our way.
Cupcakes at Camicakes
They had many cupcakes that stimulated our curiosity. All the cupcakes looked interesting and full of flavor, but we settled on just four.
Key Lime Pie
Our first choice was key lime, a yellow cake with key lime flavored frosting. The mildly tart flavor of the frosting wasn’t enough to put us in the mindset of eating a key lime pie. We were more reminded of the pie after actually biting into the cupcake. The bottom had a lime flavored filling similar Krispy Kreme’s lemon puff donut. That made the key lime even more believable.
Our next choice was raspberry lemonade, which was exactly as the flavor suggests. A yellow cake topped with a mixture of tangy lemon and sweet raspberry flavor. This cake, as with all the others, had such a solid consistency. It wasn’t a boatload of icing, but it was creamy and rich enough. It was reminiscent of homemade pound cake.
Strawberries and Cream
Next, we chose strawberries and cream, another yellow cake selection with a pale pink strawberry and cream flavored frosting. The cake had the same full, solid texture to it, and a subtle sweet taste. The frosting was also semi-sweet and was decorated with a fresh strawberry half.
White Chocolate Macadamia
Most every cupcake shop has the traditional cupcake flavor, the yellow cake with a butter cream frosting. We’ve even seen many of the wilder flavors replicated. White chocolate macadamia is a favorite cookie flavor of ours, but we had never seen it in the form of a cupcake in any of the shops we’ve come across.
This yellow cake was topped with a creamy white frosting and white chocolate chips. It had no macadamia nuts, but it still tasted just as good and the famous cookie. The white chocolate chips added a perfect hint of extra sweetness to the mild flavored frosting.
Overall Experience at Camicakes
Camicakes at the Buckhead location was very clean and in order, the service was quick, and the cupcakes were delicious. We look forward to returning to see how they put a spin on more of their flavors!
